Study how people carry out activities in their everyday surroundings to understand the circumstances shaping their behaviour. Use field observation when a service depends on real documents, devices, other people or working practices that a studio session would miss. Agree the questions and activities to investigate, recruit relevant participants and plan accessible visits. Watch what happens, record observations and ask occasional questions to clarify actions. Adjust how much you interrupt to balance understanding with observing natural behaviour.
