Designing for Humanity: A UX Journey in Humanitarian Aid
at Design decisions & discovery development
Type
talk
Applied design in humanitarian aid: following a story of using a design skill set under wartime constraints (equipment and medical-supply shortages), including processes, challenges, successes and failures. Also a story about systems and how change is implemented without relying on centralised control. Methods
Ethnographic ResearchStudying people in real contexts — homes, workplaces, clinics — to understand culture, practices and constraints. Immersion and observation reveal what people actually do, not only what they say.
Service DesignService design examines how people, tools and organisational processes work together to deliver an experience. Map the customer-facing steps alongside the staff activities, policies and systems that support them, often using a service blueprint. Bring the relevant teams together to identify broken handoffs, duplicated work and conflicting responsibilities, then coordinate changes across the service. Use it when problems span departments or channels and cannot be resolved through interface changes alone. Include employee experience because internal constraints shape what customers receive.
