Top Tasks

Top Tasks is a research and design method that identifies the small set of activities (typically five to ten) that matter most to your users, then measures and continuously improves the organisation's ability to support them. It is used early in a project to focus design teams on what matters to users rather than organisational priorities, and repeatedly thereafter as an ongoing management metric. The method involves gathering a long list of possible user tasks, refining it, and asking a representative sample of users to vote on which tasks are most important. The resulting league table reveals which tasks to prioritise in navigation, content, and design, and which can be safely deprioritised. Task success rates and completion times are then measured and tracked over time.
