Card sorting

Ask participants to organise cards representing content into groups that make sense to them. Use card sorting before designing or changing navigation to understand expected categories and labels. In an open sort, participants create groups and name them; in a closed sort, they use categories you supply; a hybrid allows both. Prepare representative content, give neutral instructions and compare groupings across participants. Use recurring relationships and participants' labels to shape the information architecture.
