Product Designer

Royal Mail

London

Royal Mail is changing how we serve our customers, and the role of design has never been more important in shaping how we do that. We are in the most significant period of transformation in our 500-year history, rebuilding the services that millions of people rely on every day. To do that well, we need exceptional designers who can connect strategy with delivery, bring people along with evidence and clear thinking, and set standards that elevate the work of everyone around them.

We are looking for a mid-weight Product Designer to bring hands-on design expertise to one of our product trios, combining UX and UI craft to design intuitive, accessible digital experiences across the full product lifecycle. If you want to help shape digital experiences for millions of customers across the UK, we would love to hear from you.

About the Role

As Product Designer, you will provide hands-on product design expertise within a product trio, working across the full lifecycle from discovery through interaction and interface design to delivery and iteration. You will design digital product experiences across web and app, translating customer needs into clear, usable and accessible designs.

This is a specialist individual contributor role, focused on doing the work and building capability through practice in a design function that is still emerging. You will bring critical thinking, judgement and craft to your work, configuring and directing AI agents in support of it, and connect design decisions to research, data and business outcomes to build shared confidence with your product and engineering partners.

What You'll Be Doing

At its core, this role is about designing digital products that are intuitive, usable and accessible, working across the full lifecycle from discovery to delivery.

End-to-end product design

  • Design digital product experiences across web and app, covering user flows, interactions, layouts and interface design from discovery through to delivery.

  • Create wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity designs that clearly communicate intent and can be built efficiently by engineering teams.

  • Translate customer needs, insight and requirements into clear, usable and accessible designs that improve customer experience and product outcomes.

Research and validation

  • Conduct evaluative and generative research, including customer interviews and usability testing, using AI tools to accelerate research synthesis where appropriate.

  • Use insights to inform design decisions, connecting them to product metrics and business outcomes.

AI-enabled practice

  • Apply AI tools to accelerate interaction exploration, generate design variations and support research synthesis, checking outputs for accuracy, bias and accessibility implications.

  • Configure and use AI agents to support design and research workflows within the squad.

Delivery and consistency

  • Work closely with product managers, engineers, analysts and delivery teams to ensure designs are well understood and implemented as intended, iterating on feedback and learning.

  • Apply established patterns, components and design system principles where available, contributing to consistency across the digital estate while balancing local product needs.

Collaboration and capability building

  • Work alongside service designers and analytics specialists to ensure product designs are informed by end-to-end service understanding and data-driven insight.

  • Help uplift product design maturity by demonstrating good design practice and supporting teams to work more effectively with design.

  • Follow guidance from the Design Director on tools, standards and ways of working, feeding practical learning back into the wider capability.

About You

You will bring strong product design craft, a pragmatic and hands-on mindset, and the judgement to connect design decisions to research, data and business outcomes.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Practical experience working as a Product Designer or UX/UI Designer in digital product environments.

  • Strong skills across user experience design, interaction design and interface design, designing for both web and mobile app platforms.

  • High proficiency in Figma, with familiarity with AI-enabled design plugins and prototyping workflows.

  • Good understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and ability to design inclusively for a broad and diverse customer base.

  • Ability to communicate design ideas clearly through sketches, prototypes and documentation.

  • Comfortable working in cross-functional teams with product managers, engineers and analysts.

  • A working understanding of front-end code (HTML, CSS) is an advantage, supporting effective collaboration with engineering teams.

  • Ability to connect design decisions to product metrics and business outcomes.

Personal Attributes

  • Pragmatic, hands-on mindset focused on delivering real outcomes.

  • Self-starter, comfortable navigating ambiguity and making progress independently in a growing design function.

  • Curious and open, sharing work-in-progress and using critique and feedback to sharpen decisions.

  • Connects design decisions to research, data and business outcomes to build shared confidence with partners.

  • Collaborative, comfortable working across product, engineering and analytics to embed good design practice.
